Getting Clothing on the Cheap

clothing-storeSometimes I feel like thrift/consignment stores are a bit like how Forrest Gump compared life (to a box of chocolates): you never quite know what you’re gonna get. And that’s beneficial actually. Well, at least to my girlfriend anyway.

It seems to me that whenever she has free time, she’s searching web pages for different clothing. From dresses to sneakers, boots to hats and then everything in between, she’s always looking for “the perfect” something or other. So when I happened to read in the Harrisburg Magazine about the latest award our very own consignment store received, of course – being the good, caring, loving boyfriend that I am – I told her all about it.

Well that may have – in hindsight – been a bit of a mistake. Now she’s obsessed with Fast Cash Friday at Wears Like New. This store is already inexpensive but with the additional 20 percent discount on Fridays (when paying with cash) it has become an even more attractive location for the girlfriend to spend the beginning of her weekends. Well, at least I get to go down the pub Friday nights now without getting an earache as she is admiring her new purchases, or showing them off to her girlfriends at ‘girls night out.’

Truthfully I don’t mind. I was quite interested to learn that consignment shopping is also beneficial to the environment and to the global recycling effort. She showed me this article that was most informative.

Everyone’s a winner with Wears Like New in Harrisburg as far as I’m concerned. There are smiles all around.

Getting Healthy in the New Year

wellnessIt’s not even been two weeks and already I can feel myself slipping into bad habits again! I had such great plans and New Year’s Resolutions but alas, we’re only at the 12th January and I already find myself back with the not-so-healthy eating.

So I was pleased to learn that – as part of the after school program being run this year by the Boys and Girls Club – sports, fitness and social development are going to be forming a core focal point. Now, that might not help me get in shape but if I see my boys doing it then I might be inspired as well. Plus, if they stay at this program to do homework, I’ll have extra time for myself. And thus I’ll have no excuse not to workout.

In other not-so-good news for seniors, the Loder Senior Center is in danger of closing down due to budget cuts. This is a place where seniors go to get out of the house and to combat loneliness (which often results in depression). It’s a place where they get their flu shots as well. So if it closes due to financial issues, greater fiscal problems could be the result as more medical attention will be needed when seniors don’t get their assistance from there.

Woohoo! Time to Party!

daylin-leachSo the state senators just passed a bill to legalize marijuana in Pennsylvania! I know there’s a long way to go (Corbett seems to be causing trouble as he’s no fan), but this is the first step. And as far as I’m concerned, it’s a great one!

All the Democrats voted yes and a somewhat high number of Republicans (27) did as well.  I don’t know about these nay-sayers. I mean, there are so many people out there suffering. And why? Because of college students getting high from it? That’s just crazy. I personally am wholeheartedly behind Sen. Daylin Leach, D-Montgomery, who said at the debate: “It is cruel and heartless to deny people the best medicine that is available. And it’s time to stop treating this irrationally and saying, ‘we’re not going to let you have this, we’re going to instead make you take far more dangerous and less effective drugs.’ That’s just not how we would want to be treated; it’s not how we want our families to be treated.”

And if at the same time we can use it recreationally as well…

How Low Can You Go?

I just heard some pretty not nice news today that is certainly not going to help with my mood for trying to enjoy the Super Bowl later.  In the last month there have been eight assaults on Harrisburg’s senior population.  It seems that the teenage attackers are going for society’s most vulnerable  – I mean really, how low can you go?  These elderly have ended up with bruises, broken bones and have had their money stolen.  It’s awful.

The most recent attack took place last Wednesday on Woodbine and North 4 Streets and Schuylkill and North 3rd Streets – both with men over the age of 50 being attacked.  The individuals who perpetrated the attacks were aged between 14 and 17. It’s really upsetting and just making me wonder if Harrisburg really is the right place for me to (semi)raise my kids.

Great News for Harrisburg Job-Seekers

Finally some good news in Harrisburg. It’s about time too.  With flooding and fiscal issues, the city certainly needs something good to wake up to in the mornings.    As the Fall season began, statistics rendered by the state Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) for unemployment in the Harrisburg-Carlisle region (Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry) dropped significantly to a new low of 7.4 percent. This was a reduction of 40 percent, marking the fifth lowest out of the 14 regions in the department’s study.  Further, just looking at statistics from the same timeframe a year ago, it was found that unemployment was 30 percent lower.  Today the figure is less than the state and national average.

Non-Agricultural Jobs in Trouble

However, the region is still not out of trouble. It seems that farming jobs are somewhat easier to come by, but other areas are still fighting to stay on top.  Indeed, in September, the amount of non-farm job vacancies plummeted by 2,600 to 317,500 which was described by the DLI as “the largest decline in a single month since 1990.”  That cannot be making the working class of the Harrisburg-Carlisle region very happy.

As well, looking at other industries, leisure and hospitality service jobs also witnessed a significant plummet of 4,400.  Mining went down too, but only by 300.  According to the DLI, some of these were expected (especially those in the hospitality service areas due to normal seasonal adjustments) but the situation was definitely worsened by the flood damage from tropical storm Lee that was encountered at Hersheypark and restaurants in the area.  But there was an increase in job availability in the areas of IT, education and government.

So it seems overall, there is hope for Harrisburg employment but there are still various obstacles the city has to pull down before everyone who is viable to work is in an appropriate job.  The city has had a lot to deal with recently; one step at a time needs to be its motto now.
